The Cascade
Teaser11

Its early morning and the two vehicles, the black people carrier and the rusty old white van pull in to the access road at the University of Manchester. The doors open and the groggy inhabitants emerge who all save the drivers appear to have slept the journey back to Manchester. Overhead rows of small birds chirp and swoop around, making the most of the fact that it is not yet raining.

Aidan is ruffling his hair and yawning and Erin is slowly opening the back of the carrier to help Jas out, seemingly forgetting that she lost her chair the night before. She looks up into Jas stern face and mutters “oops!” before looking over to the lads for assistance. “We’re not stopping.” Mason says in usual gruff and brief manner. “No?” says the professor in his haughty tone. “You’ve got some explaining to do.” He adds. “I know. But lets all go home first, I need a shower.” Mason offers in reply. The professor nods his acquiescence and motions to the other scientists to leave the unloading and get off. They look at each other startled, shrug and then lock up the van. Mason ushers Erin and Aidan back into the carrier so that he can drop them off home.

Inside the carrier Aidan says, “You wanna use my place again?” “Yeah that would be good mate cheers.” Mason says from the driving seat. They move off and into the city. In the back the girls are quietly chatting and Erin asks Jas, “Why does he always wear a suit? He never used to.” Jas remains silent and then Mason butts in and says, “I know, but times have changed and so have I.” “Tell me about it mate.” Aidan offers in support.  “I will, today I think.” Aidan looks shocked and confused and looking back into the carrier he can see that the others are equally shocked.  “We need to gather everyone together, later.” Mason adds. “What more is there to tell mate?” Aidan asks. “Certain things that were put into motion when I left London are coming to a head and everyone needs to know.” “Okay.” Aidan says stretching the word to indicate that he does not fully understand. “Trust me you will understand when I tell you.” Mason replies briefly before looking in the rear view mirror at the girls, and then indicating left off the road and into the road where Jas lives.
