The Cascade
Teaser10

A cool breeze gently rolls through the long grass as the night begins its last steps towards dawn. There is a strange light in the sky that is not dawn and not night, as though some giant light is filling the surrounding area in a fluctuating half light. The cool breeze stirs the figures lying in the grass. Erin opens her eyes groggily and looking around can only see the long grass, unsure of her surroundings she sits up and looks around. She is surprised to be sat in rolling grassland and tries to focus herself into remembering where she is. She frowns and grimaces and then rubs her temples as though a headache is preventing her from thinking clearly. As she does so she notices the half-light in the sky and looks up. She is visibly shocked to see the anomaly pulsing with light 20 metres off the ground and some way off from her position. This jolts her awareness and she jumps to her feet and looks around, but all she can see is long grass. “Jas? Rune?” she shouts out hopefully. A few metres away an audible groan catches her attention and she rushes over shouting, “Jas!” But she finds Rune half awake and still laying on the grass. Erin kneels down and puts a hand tenderly on Rune’s shoulder, “You okay kid?” She asks. “Yeah I guess, give me a minute okay?” “Sure kid take your time, we just took a hell of a ride!” “Where are we?” Rune asks as she sits up rubbing her head. “I don’t know yet, but we gotta find Jas first.” The sound of the voices brings Jas from out of a strange dream about flying over long grass and she moans as she struggles to open her eyes under the weight of a piercing headache. She pulls herself up to a sitting position and looks around. To her surprise her wheel chair is a few feet away and it looks like it’s in a mess. “Oh” she groans out loud and this catches Erin’s attention. “Jas? Jas!” Erin shouts. Jas looks up and only sees tall grass so she raises her hand into the air. Erin sees this and runs over to her, “You okay love?” she asks. “I will be. Can you help me into my chair?” Erin smiles and she turns around and lifts the chair into an upright position. As she moves around it to move it forwards towards Jas she notices that its not moving very well, even over flattened grass. “Looks like its mangled a bit,” she says sheepishly to Jas. “At least it will move better than I can” Jas replies curtly. Erin helps her into the chair and from behind them Rune appears through the grass. “Glad your okay” Rune offers and Jas can only look hard at her, considering her situation. “So anyone know where the hell we are?” Jas asks. “Well Dorothy we are not in Kansas anymore!” Erin says and this cracks a grin on all their faces for a moment. “Yeah but where are we?” Rune asks. “I don’t know kid,” Erin replies, “but I know what got us here.” She points across to the anomaly in the sky and they all stand awe struck looking at it.
